A rope dog lead is a lead built from a single length of rope, finished by hand at each end rather than crimped or stitched like a flat webbing lead. Every rope dog lead here is made to order in Britain, in 6mm, 10mm, 12mm cotton or 14mm British wool rope, as a clip lead, a slip lead, a figure of 8 or a hands-free lead, cut to the length you ask for.
This is the lead half of the rope and cord range. The collars, seat belts and keyrings live over there. What follows is only about leads.
What the rope actually is
Four different ropes run through this collection, and they are not interchangeable.
- 10mm PPM or nylon rope. The workhorse. It is what the customisable rope leads, the hands-free leads and the Greenwich Yarn leads are built on. Synthetic, fast-drying, holds its colour, and strong enough for any breed.
- 6mm rope. The lighter option, used on the slip leads and the Greenwich Yarn Mini. It packs down small and sits better on a small dog without looking like it belongs to something twice the size.
- 12mm twisted cotton. The Cotton Mill leads: cotton milled and dyed in Yorkshire, and laid into rope in North Yorkshire. Soft and warm in the hand. Cotton tightens its twist when wet, so dry it out properly before it goes away.
- 14mm spliced British wool. The Sheep Shed leads, hand-spliced at the handle and whipped over with 1mm hemp cord. Swaledale is the ecru one, Brampton the undyed charcoal.
Greenwich Yarn is not a rope. It is a finish: a primary nano cord whipped over the rope by hand, then an accent colour worked over the top. Same technique on the collars, the leads and the keyrings.
Lengths
Most of these are cut to your number rather than sold in sizes.
- Fixed-length clip, slip and figure of 8 leads: 120cm to 230cm depending on the design, in 10cm steps. 120cm is the standard and 130cm to 140cm are the ones most people actually order.
- Hands-free rope leads: 7ft to 16ft, adjusted on the walk with a BioThane® slider so the same lead works short in traffic and long on a quiet path. The full range is in hands-free dog leads.
- Cotton Mill and Sheep Shed leads: a fixed 130cm from handle to clip rather than cut to length. The Sheep Shed Hybrid leads are 130cm as a clip, slip or figure of 8, or 8ft as a hands-free.
If you are unsure, longer is the more forgiving mistake. A 120cm lead on a tall handler is short; a 140cm lead on a short handler is simply held further up.
Hardware
The Sheep Shed wool leads, the Cotton Mill cotton leads, the leather leads and the fixed Greenwich Yarn editions are solid brass throughout, nothing plated. On the customisable leads you choose the fitting yourself. The Greenwich Yarn customisable leads take a clip in solid brass, solid brass nickel plated, or zinc in a black or gun-metal finish, and the customisable rope, BioThane and slip leads offer the same four choices on the snap hook, with D-rings and rivets in brass, stainless steel, or steel with a black or gun-metal surface finish. Where a customisable lead has a buckle and you pick a plated finish, that buckle is plated over steel. Each product page lists what that particular lead can be built with.
The hardware is load-tested by its manufacturer, and I guarantee it for twelve months. If a clip fails inside that year, send it back and I will replace it.
Clip, slip or figure of 8
Three ways to attach the same rope to the same dog, and the choice matters more than the colour.
A clip lead ends in a trigger snap and needs a collar or a harness to clip to. It is the default, and it is the right answer if your dog already wears a collar and you want the lead off the dog the moment you are home.
A slip lead is one continuous loop. The lead and the collar are the same piece of rope. It goes over the head, tightens when the dog pulls into it and releases the moment the dog stops. Nothing to clip, nothing else to buy. It is why a slip lives in a coat pocket.
A figure of 8 adds a second loop around the muzzle, so a dog that pulls hard turns its head rather than loading its neck. It is a training tool, not an everyday lead for a dog that already walks well.

Who a rope lead suits
Rope suits anyone who wants a lead with some weight and grip to it. It does not cut into the hand the way a thin flat lead does, it dries out after a wet walk, and on the synthetic ropes mud brushes off once it is dry.
It is not the answer for everything. If most of your walks are water and deep mud and you want to wipe the lead clean rather than dry it, BioThane is the better material and I make leads in that too. If your dog is a heavy chewer, no rope is chew-proof.

Are rope dog leads suitable for large dogs?
Yes. 10mm rope is the usual choice for larger and stronger dogs because it spreads the load across your hand and is easier to grip. The 12mm cotton and 14mm wool leads are heavier again. If your dog pulls hard, a longer lead and a wider rope will be more comfortable to hold than a short thin one.
