FAQs | Handmade Dog Collars, Rope Leads & Personalised Accessories UK

I make every Green Dog collar and lead by hand in my small Oxfordshire workshop, so it’s natural to have a few questions before ordering. Here’s everything you might want to know about sizing, materials, shipping, guarantees, returns, repairs and custom work.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just drop me a message — it’s just me and Boris in the workshop, and you’ll always hear back from a real human.

🔹 Ordering & Shipping

What currency are your prices in?

All prices are shown in UK Sterling (£).

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes — I ship internationally.
Shipping is calculated at checkout, and all parcels are sent tracked.

If your country isn’t listed, email me and I’ll check.

How long does a handmade order take?

Every item is crafted to order within 1–4 working days.
Shipping times:

  • UK: 1-2 working-day courier, or 3-5 working day courier (Royal Mail, Evri)
  • Europe: 5–14 business days (customs dependent) (Royal Mail)
  • Rest of World: 7–20 business days (customs dependent) (Royal Mail)

You’ll receive tracking as soon as your parcel leaves the workshop. Any delays I will always follow up but unfortunately sometimes these delays are completely out of my control.

How is my order packaged?

All orders are packed in recyclable, reusable packaging.
Where possible, I reuse supplier boxes — good for the planet, good for your dog.

Do you gift wrap?

Not by default, but email me if it’s a gift and I’ll happily quote for custom wrapping or a handwritten note.

Do your prices include VAT?

Green Dog is not VAT-registered, so there’s no VAT added at checkout.
International customers may need to pay local import duties.

Can I cancel my order?

Yes — as long as it hasn’t shipped yet.
After dispatch, you’ll need to use the returns process.

What if I typed the wrong address?

Reply to your confirmation email within 24 hours with the correct address.
After that window, I can’t guarantee changes.

🔹 Returns, Adjustments & Guarantees

Do you accept returns?

Because everything is handmade to order, returns are accepted only on unused items that don’t include custom colours or personalised hardware.

If something arrives damaged or faulty, I’ll fix it — no stress.

What if the size isn’t quite right?

If the correct size was made but the fit feels off, email me within 15 working days.
I’m a small brand, and I’ll always do what I can to help.

Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes — I offer a Fair Use Craftsmanship Assurance.
This means:

  • I stand by my workmanship
  • I use premium, tested hardware
  • I inspect every item before it leaves my workshop
  • If something fails due to a workmanship issue, I can repair or replace it at a fair cost

But — and this is important — dogs live adventurous lives. They chew, play, roll, swim, tug, scrape, pull and occasionally attempt gymnastics. No collar or lead is indestructible, so I can’t offer a lifetime “no-questions-asked” replacement guarantee.

What I can promise is honesty, fairness and help where I reasonably can.

Do you offer repairs?

Yes — and this is where Green Dog is different.

I offer a Repair & Renew Service, even for items I didn’t make.
For a fee between £10 and £100, depending on the job, I can repair:

  • Broken buckles
  • Damaged snap hooks
  • Frayed rope
  • Loose stitching
  • Worn leather
  • Hardware upgrades
  • End-cap replacements (where possible)
  • Or, even reproduce a product you can no longer find and may have been discontinued.

It’s sustainable, sentimental and far better than replacing the whole thing. It's this type of project that genuinely excites me.

Can I upgrade my hardware later?

Absolutely.
I can replace clips, rings and hardware with solid brass or solid nickel options.
End caps are the only part that can’t be upgraded to solid metal.

🔹 Sizing, Materials & Craftsmanship

Who makes your products?

Every single item is handmade by me — Ed — in my Oxfordshire workshop, supervised by my dachshund Boris.
No factories. No outsourcing. No shortcuts.

What materials do you use?

I work with premium, long-lasting materials:

  • British wool rope from small UK farms, spun and milled in Britain
  • Naturally dyed cotton rope manufactured in the UK
  • PPM rope and paracord (Nano & Type III) for lightweight, durable designs
  • BioThane® for fully waterproof, wipe-clean collars and leads
  • London-tanned bridle leather from historic British suppliers
  • Solid brass and solid nickel hardware chosen for strength and longevity

I choose the best materials I can source, not the cheapest.

What’s special about your wool and cotton collections?

My wool and cotton ranges are built around British sourcing and comfort. The wool rope is made from fleece from small British farms, spun and milled in the UK, giving a soft, natural feel that’s still strong enough for everyday walks.

The cotton is manufactured and naturally dyed in the UK, so colours feel rich without being harsh on your dog’s coat. Both the wool and cotton collections are designed as a slower, more considered alternative to synthetic-heavy, fast-fashion dog accessories.

Are your products waterproof?

  • BioThane: Fully waterproof, mud-proof and wipe clean. Ideal for beach days, mud lovers and all-weather adventures.
  • PPM & Paracord: Water-resistant and fast drying. Tough, lightweight and great for everyday walks or training.
  • British Wool Rope: Naturally antimicrobial, odour-resistant and excellent against the elements. Wool repels light rain, stays warm even when damp, wicks moisture away from the coat and dries evenly. Let it air-dry after wet walks to keep the fibres looking their best.
  • Cotton Rope: Soft, natural and comfortable for everyday wear. Cotton handles light moisture fine but absorbs more water than wool. Allow it to air-dry fully to maintain shape and prevent stretching.
  • Leather: Water tolerant but happiest with gentle air drying. Avoid radiators, direct heat or tumble dryers.
  • How accurate are measurements?

Collar materials all have their own strengths, and each dog is different.
Here’s a quick guide to help you choose between BioThane, PPM rope, Paracord, British wool, naturally dyed UK cotton, and traditional bridle leather — all materials I use in the workshop for their durability, comfort and long-term performance.

Material Best For Key Benefits Considerations Weather Performance
BioThane Adventure dogs, swimmers, mud-lovers, rainy-day walkers Fully waterproof, wipe clean, ultra-durable, vegan-friendly Slightly firmer feel than rope ★★★★★ Waterproof
PPM Rope Everyday walks, puppies, lightweight comfort Soft, strong, fast-drying, low-maintenance Not as premium-feeling as natural fibres ★★★★☆ Water-resistant
Paracord (Nano & Type III) Active dogs, training, high-tension handling Extremely strong, rot-resistant, UV-resistant, fast drying Slightly firmer texture on very short coats ★★★★☆ Water-resistant
British Wool Rope Style-focused dogs, cool-weather walks, sensitive skin Naturally antimicrobial, odour-resistant, warm when damp, breathable, UK farmed & milled Slightly heavier than PPM; air-dry after heavy rain ★★★★☆ Weather resilient
UK Cotton Rope (Naturally Dyed) Everyday comfort, soft handling, matching sets, warmer months Soft, natural feel, UK-made, gentle on coat, rich natural dyes Absorbs more water than wool; dry fully to maintain shape ★★★☆☆ Light moisture
British Bridle Leather Classic style, traditional look, long-term durability Strong, timeless, develops a beautiful patina, premium British hides Not ideal for heavy swimmers; requires gentle care ★★★☆☆ Water tolerant

Each piece is handmade, so allow up to ½ inch variation.

Which hardware is best for long-term wear?

Solid brass or solid nickel is the best choice for dogs who:

  • Swim
  • Roll
  • Run through mud
  • Live outdoors
  • Live dangerously

Zinc alloy is strong (160kg+) but may show cosmetic wear sooner.

🔹 Custom Orders & Stockists

Do you offer custom colours and sizing?

Yes — customisation is the heart of Green Dog.
If you have something specific in mind, email me.

Do you make collars for tiny dogs or giant breeds?

Yes. I make everything to order, so I can tailor sizes from Chihuahuas to Wolfhounds.

Do you offer wholesale?

Yes — for shops that align with my values of craft, sustainability and British-made quality.
Email me for trade pricing.

🔹 Sustainability & Brand Values

How sustainable is Green Dog?

Sustainability isn’t a slogan — it’s how I run the workshop:

  • Recyclable and reusable packaging
  • Material offcuts reused or repurposed
  • British wool from UK farms and UK-manufactured, naturally dyed cotton for key collections
  • Small-batch production, not mass manufacturing
  • Premium materials designed to last, not be replaced every season
  • A repair-over-replace ethos to keep well-loved gear in use

The greenest product is the one that lasts.
