Why I Build With BioThane: The Story Behind the Waterproof Range

Most of the materials on my bench arrived through tradition. Rope splicing, wool, vegetable-tanned leather: these are crafts with centuries behind them, and I came to them the way most makers do, by learning what has always worked. BioThane arrived differently. It arrived because of the weather, and because of colour.

If you walk a dog in England, you know the first half of that. The most beautiful collar in the world is the one that suffers most, because it is strapped to an animal whose favourite places are rivers, puddles, and whatever that was in the hedgerow. Leather is a wonderful material and I will always work with it, but leather resents water. What I wanted was an all-weather alternative that gave up nothing in looks, and BioThane brought something extra I had not expected to care about as much as I do: a spectrum of colours that lets a customer build a piece specific to their own taste.

Where It Started: One Strap on a Paracord Collar

My first designs were non-adjustable paracord collars with safe lock buckles, each one made to size. They taught me the craft, but making to a fixed size has limits, for the customer and for the maker. How I Work With It at the Bench

Every BioThane piece starts with a set of templates I designed and 3D printed myself. When an order comes in, I cut the roll with a rotary knife against whichever template the design needs, which keeps every piece consistent, order after order. The ends are cut to a point and the edges squared off, which has become my fingerprint on the material; plenty of makers finish BioThane, and no two of us finish it the same way. Holes go in with a classic punch, and the double cap rivets are pressed by hand on a spindle press. Instead of embossing, a woven cotton label sits embedded in the fold, so the branding is stitched into the construction rather than stamped onto the surface.

Working BioThane is nothing like working leather, and I value both for what they are. Leather is the more versatile material and I put far more detailed handwork into my leathercraft, but I will say it plainly: it will never last the way BioThane does. Every design in the range starts the same way: your measurement, your choice of BioThane colour, and your choice of hardware finish. I cut the strap, set the rivets, fit the hardware, and check the finished piece before it leaves, because the person who made it is the person inspecting it. What Owners of Muddy Dogs Tell Me

The reviews tell this part better than I can. One customer chose the BioThane collar in bright orange and lilac for a dog that likes to get wet, and describes it as easily rinsed and as good as new. Another runs a Labrador through several walks a day and says it no longer matters how wet it has been, the collar and lead are always ready. None of this replaces the rest of the bench. Wool, cotton, rope, and leather each have their place, and choosing between them is half the pleasure of a made-to-order piece.
