A British Dog Collar and Lead Set Made the Traditional Way
I started working on The Cotton Mill Collection because I wanted something that felt honest, grounded, and unmistakably British. A proper handmade dog collar and matching cotton rope dog leads set that carries the essence of real craft. Nothing rushed. Nothing mass produced. Just quality materials and thoughtful construction.

This range is built around two things that matter to me.
Good materials and good makers.
Finding both in the UK is harder than it should be, which is why discovering Kefi Ropemakers was such a turning point for this collection and for me, personally.
The rope behind the collection
Kefi Ropemakers are based in North Yorkshire. Proper artisans keeping traditional rope making alive, using machinery and skills that go back generations. I only buy their rope, but it felt important to share why I chose them, so here goes:

Wanting to create my own premium dog leads, a few things really influenced The Cotton Mill Collection:

What I make with it
My Cotton Mill sets include both the collar and the matching rope lead. A proper cotton and leather set that sits firmly in the world of premium dog leads and luxury dog accessories, without feeling flashy or over the top.
The collar
Each collar is made using:
- 4 mm braided cotton cord
- Black or chestnut brown bridle leather
- Solid brass roller buckle and D-ring
- Handmade construction with my usual attention to detail
- The signature bone tassel, a quiet Green Dog signature, which can stay on the collar or move onto a keyring
The collar is soft, flexible and lightweight, but supported by bridle leather so it sits neatly on the neck. This balance is what makes it feel like a genuine british dog collar rather than something mass produced.

Because each one is made to order, it also fits into the world of custom collars for dogs. Every handmade dog collar is finished for your individual dog, not pulled from a warehouse shelf.
The lead
Each lead is made using:
- Matching coloured 12 mm cotton rope from Kefi Ropemakers
- Hand splicing for strength and a clean finish
- Solid brass snap hook and D-ring
- My signature hand spliced tassel at the handle
The tassel is not quite a pompom and not quite a fringe. It has become a recognisable detail for Green Dog. A finishing touch that shows the lead has been made by hand. Together, the collar and the lead create a cotton rope dog leads set that feels personal, purposeful and long lasting. Every piece is very much a handmade dog leads option, rooted in real craft.
The seasonal colours
For The Cotton Mill Collection I wanted colours that feel like British autumn and winter. Warm, grounded and easy to live with.

Why cotton and leather work so well together
Cotton rope has a softness that synthetics often struggle to match. It feels comfortable in the hand, and dogs tend to relax into it as a material. The structure of cotton rope tightens slightly when wet which adds natural strength.
Bridle leather brings refinement, shape and adjustability. It keeps the collar tidy on the neck and ages in a way that only good leather can. The longer you use it, the more character it has.
Solid brass hardware adds weight and reliability. Brass develops a patina over time.
Because of this combination, The Cotton Mill sets sit comfortably in the space of premium dog leads and luxury dog accessories, but without shouting about it.

Honest disadvantages
I think it is important to be open about this part too.
- Cotton will absorb dirt, so it benefits from occasional hand washing
- Cotton takes a little longer to dry than some synthetic materials
- Natural dyes can soften slowly with age which I personally like, but some people prefer a very stable, never changing colour
- If your dog is an extreme puller, BioThane or paracord might be more suitable, as they are designed for harder, more technical use

What is The Cotton Mill collection from Green Dog?
The Cotton Mill is my handwoven cotton range, made by hand in my Oxford studio. Each collar is woven from 4mm cotton cord, milled and dyed in Yorkshire, over a veg-tanned leather strap. Each lead is hand spliced from 12mm twisted cotton rope from the same Yorkshire mill and finished with my signature tassel at the handle. Everything is finished with solid brass hardware throughout. It is made for people who want honest materials and real craft rather than something pulled off a shelf.
Is cotton good for dog collars?
Cotton is soft against the coat, breathable and comfortable, which suits dogs with sensitive skin. It handles everyday walking in mild to moderate conditions well. For a dog that swims most days or walks in heavy mud, BioThane® is the more practical choice. Cotton is the one to pick if you want a natural fibre collar with a traditional British feel.
Will cotton rope wear differently to synthetics like nylon or BioThane?
Yes. Cotton has a softer, more natural feel and it shows its age differently. It picks up dirt sooner than BioThane or nylon and it mellows in appearance over time, which I happen to like. For most everyday walking that is a fair trade for the comfort and the texture. If your dog is an extreme puller, or you need something for hard, technical use, BioThane or paracord will suit you better.
Are the collars suitable for all dog breeds?
They suit small, medium and most larger breeds. The collars are made in eight sizes, from 9 to 25.5 inches, in 4mm woven cotton on a veg-tanned leather strap with a solid brass roller buckle and D-ring. Measure your dog before you order and use my measuring guide if you are unsure.

The Cotton Mill collars are made in eight set sizes, from 9 to 25.5 inches, rather than cut to a bespoke measurement, so measure your dog and order the size that fits. Every piece is still made by hand after you order it. If your dog falls between sizes, get in touch before ordering. What colours are available in The Cotton Mill Collection?
Four colourways: burgundy, midnight blue, harvest yellow and olive green. Each one is made as a woven collar and as a matching rope lead. They were chosen to sit well against brass and leather, and against a wide range of coat colours.
What dyes are used on The Cotton Mill cotton?
The rope comes from Kefi Ropemakers in North Yorkshire, and it is milled and dyed there using traditional processes. The dyes are plant-based. Natural colour tends to soften a little with age, which I happen to like.
Is the hardware solid brass?
Yes, solid brass throughout. The collar has a solid brass roller buckle and D-ring. The lead has a solid brass trigger snap clip and O-ring. It is solid brass all the way through rather than a brass-coloured coating over another metal, which is why it can be polished back and why it takes a patina instead of flaking. Every fitting carries my twelve-month hardware guarantee.
How strong are the cotton rope dog leads?
The 12mm cotton rope comes from Kefi Ropemakers in North Yorkshire. It is soft to hold but genuinely strong, and it tightens its twist slightly when wet. Each lead is hand spliced using techniques taken from traditional marine ropework, which makes a join that holds under tension. The brass fittings are load-tested by the manufacturer who makes them.
How do I care for a Cotton Mill collar and lead?
Spot clean with a damp cloth, warm water and a mild soap. Do not machine wash it and do not leave the leather soaking. If it is muddy, let the mud dry and brush it off before any damp cleaning. Always air dry naturally, and dry the rope out fully before you put it away. The leather benefits from occasional conditioning. Brass can be polished if you like it bright, or left to patina. The cotton colour may soften a little with wear, which is normal.
Can I get a matching Cotton Mill collar and lead set?
Yes, although they are sold as individual pieces that match rather than as a boxed set. Buy the collar, the lead, or both. All four colourways run across the collars and the leads, so you can build a set in stages, or order them together and I will make them at the same time so the colours agree.
How long does an order take?
