British wool, graded and spun in Yorkshire, and laid into rope in Britain. It arrives here as finished rope and braid, and is woven by hand. That is the whole route, and it is the reason this is worth making.
About this piece+
The Sheep Shed Rope Lead in Ecru is made by hand in Britain from 14mm spliced British wool rope in undyed ecru wool, chosen for its warmth, texture and natural resilience. A brown veg-tanned cowhide tab at the handle, solid brass hardware throughout, and an 11mm Green Dog brass disc on the O-ring at the handle, stamped once with the logo. The splice is whipped by hand and left with a tassel at the handle, the same finish as the Cotton Mill rope leads.
Made for the field
British wool is what the sheep wears through a Yorkshire winter, and it behaves the same way on your dog. It keeps some of its natural lanolin, so light rain runs off rather than soaking in. It does not go soggy or hold stains the way cotton rope does. Let mud dry and it brushes out; when it needs more, it washes like a wool jumper. Over time it felts slightly, which makes it softer and, to my eye, better looking.
The rope is also made for seaweed farming, and its maker has tested it submerged in seawater over 90, 180 and 270 days.
Customers tell me they have not needed to take theirs off, and do not want to. It is the lead you show off in the city and take pride in on a muddy walk. When it has done a few winters, send it back and I will re-whip and restore it.
This is a handmade wool dog lead for people who care about what their dog's kit is made from. The wool is coarser than merino but durable and warm in the hand even in cold weather. It retains some natural lanolin, which is part of why it sheds light rain rather than soaking it up. The rope softens with use without losing its structure.
Solid brass clip, brass O-ring embedded in the handle loop, and the 11mm Green Dog brass disc that hangs from it. Nothing plated. Hardware covered by Green Dog's twelve-month guarantee.

Materials & construction+
Rope: 14mm British wool rope in ecru, hand-spliced at the handle. It is coarser than merino, and chosen for exactly that reason. British wool, graded and spun in Yorkshire, and laid into rope in Britain.
Whipping: The splice is whipped over by hand with 1mm hemp cord. Wool for the body, hemp to bind and protect the join.
Leather tab: Brown veg-tanned cowhide at the handle, embossed with the Green Dog logo on one side and the name on the other.
Hardware: Solid brass trigger snap clip and O-ring embedded in the handle loop, plus an 11mm Green Dog brass disc stamped once with the logo. Twelve-month hardware guarantee.
Length: 130cm from handle to clip.
Sizing & fit+
Length: 130cm from the handle loop to the clip. A standard everyday walking length.
Handling: The handle loop sits comfortably in the hand. Take a wrap around your wrist or drop it over a shoulder when you want the dog closer.
Which dogs: The 14mm rope fills the hand rather than cutting into it, which is what you want on a dog that pulls, and it stays warm to hold in cold weather.
Other lengths: If you need something different, get in touch before ordering.
Changing your mind: This lead is made at my standard 130cm in a set colourway, so ordering it is an ordinary purchase and you keep a full 30 days from delivery to change your mind, against the 14 the law requires. If it arrives faulty, damaged or not as described, I will sort it out: repair, replacement or refund, with the postage at my expense. The terms are on my returns page.
Care & durability+
Wool rope: Most of the time, leave it alone. Let mud dry and brush it out with a soft brush. When it needs more than that, wash it by hand the way you would a wool jumper: about ten minutes in cool to lukewarm water, no warmer than 30°C, with a wool wash. Press it gently through the water rather than rubbing or twisting it, then rinse in water of the same temperature. Press the water out, never wring, roll it in a towel, then lay it out straight and let it dry fully, away from radiators and direct sun. Heat, sudden temperature changes and rubbing are what felt wool, so avoid those, along with biological detergent and bleach. The wool is untreated, which is what gives it the handle, and it will felt slightly with wear. That is expected, and it makes it softer. Keep the leather tab out of the water where you can and wipe it instead. The wool retains some natural lanolin, which is part of why it sheds light rain rather than soaking it up, so most of the time rain is not something you need to act on.
Hemp whipping: Wipe it if it picks up mud and let it dry naturally. Otherwise leave it alone.
Leather tab: Wipe it with a damp cloth and let it dry naturally, not on a radiator. Condition it once or twice a year with a leather balm.
Hardware: Wipe the brass clean. It darkens into a patina with use, which is normal. Polish it lightly if you prefer it bright. Covered by Green Dog's twelve-month hardware guarantee.
Hand wash only: A washing machine is too vigorous for the wool, and the leather and brass would not thank you for it either.
Wool is the one material here that genuinely gets better. Customers tell me their pieces have improved with use, not worn out.
Questions & answers+
What is this wool and why use it for a lead? It is British wool, graded and spun in Yorkshire. The fleece is coarser than merino, which makes it a poor choice for a jumper and a very good one for a lead, durable and warm in the hand in cold weather. It retains some natural lanolin, which is part of why it sheds light rain rather than soaking it up.
How is the handle made? The rope is hand-spliced at the handle, then the splice is whipped over by hand with 1mm hemp cord. The brass O-ring sits embedded in the handle loop.
Can I put it in the washing machine? Not in the machine, but yes by hand, the way you would a wool jumper: a gentle soak in cool water, a mild wool wash, then leave it to dry naturally. Keep the leather tab out of the water where you can and wipe it instead. Most of the time you will not need to: let mud dry and brush it out.
Does it soften or go floppy over time? It softens without losing its structure. That is the splice and the whipping doing their job. Wool is the material here that improves with use. The same rope is made for seaweed farming and has been tested submerged in seawater over 90, 180 and 270 days.
Is there a matching collar? The Sheep Shed Collar in Ecru, a different British wool in the same ecru white. Put the collar and the lead in the same basket and 10% comes off the lead automatically, with no code. It does not combine with a discount code.
How long will it take to arrive? Two to six working days is the making window, and it ends when the lead is dispatched. UK tracked post is one to two working days after that, so door to door is usually three to eight working days. UK tracked delivery is free over £55.
Delivery & returns+
Made to order in Britain and dispatched in 2 to 6 working days. It's worth two minutes with the measuring guide before you order. This is a size from a range I already make, so if the size turns out to be wrong, message me within 14 days. An exchange or an amendment is usually simpler than sending it back. If I got it wrong, I cover the postage both ways; if the measurement turned out not to suit your dog, the postage each way is yours. Either way, message me. I'd far rather talk it through than have you post anything. You also have 30 days from delivery to change your mind, where the law asks for 14: send it back unused and I'll refund what you paid for it and the standard delivery I charged, and the return postage is at your cost. If anything arrives faulty, damaged or not as described, that's on me: repair, replacement or refund, and I cover the postage.
