Green Dog at Daylesford

The woven British wool collars have been rehomed to Daylesford, and redesigned specifically for them.

Not the same collar moved onto someone else's shelf. The Daylesford pieces have their own leatherwork, their own proportions and their own finish, made to sit in that shop rather than in this one. They are the only place the wool goes onto a leather strap now.

Daylesford is the right home for it: a farm shop built on British produce from British farms, which is the same argument I have been making about British fleece since the Sheep Shed started.

What is in store at Daylesford

The woven wool collars, in cream or grey. Mini for small breeds, Classic for most dogs, and the wider Sighthound weave for whippets, lurchers and greyhounds. Hand-woven undyed British wool over a veg-tanned leather strap, with brass hardware.

The 8ft hands-free wool leads, in cream or grey. 14mm British wool rope, hand-spliced, with brass hardware. This lead has never been sold on this site. It was designed and made for Daylesford, and it is not a version of anything in the online range.

The wool is undyed in both colours. Cream and grey are the colours the sheep grew. British wool, graded and spun in Yorkshire, and laid into rope in Britain.

The Daylesford pieces are finished differently from the retail range on purpose. They carry no tassel and no Green Dog brass disc. If you have seen one in the shop and then looked for it here, that is why it is not on this site: it was made to be a Daylesford piece.

What is still made here

The wool has not left Green Dog. It carries on in The Sheep Shed, on a strap that suits a wet British winter better than leather does:

• The Wool and BioThane hybrid collars, the same hand-woven cream and charcoal British wool on a waterproof wipe-clean strap
• Custom Brampton and Custom Dingley hybrids, where you pick the weave, the strap, the keeper and the finish on every piece of metal
• Custom Brampton Mini and Custom Dingley Mini for small breeds, 8 to 13 inches
• The Brampton and Swaledale wool leads, 14mm hand-spliced wool rope at 130cm, and the wool keyring tassels

Every one of those carries the 11mm Green Dog brass disc, stamped once with the logo, and the tassel on the leads. They are the retail range and they are unchanged.

Why British wool

British wool is one of the most under-used natural fibres in the country. Most fleeces are sold for next to nothing or burned, because the global market does not value them. Putting British wool on a dog collar is a small piece of a much bigger argument for keeping the fleece market alive, and putting it on a shelf next to British food is the clearest version of that argument I have managed so far.

I do not buy fleece. I buy finished wool rope and braid, British wool, graded and spun in Yorkshire and laid into rope in Britain, and I weave and splice it by hand.
