Small Dog Collars: How to Choose and Fit a Collar for a Small Breed
Small dogs need collars with a strap width of 15 to 20mm rather than the standard 25mm, paired with lighter hardware and proper sizing using the two-finger rule. The Sheep Shed Mini uses a 15mm strap on a two-row fishtail weave designed specifically for small breeds.
I get a lot of small dog enquiries through the workshop. Dachshunds first, then chihuahuas, miniature poodles, papillons, Yorkies, and the occasional Italian greyhound that sits at the edge of the small breed and sighthound categories. The thing they have in common is that the standard 25mm dog collar overwhelms them, both visually and physically. The industry tends to scale down a standard collar rather than design for a small dog from scratch. The result is a collar that fits but does not feel right.
What follows is what I have worked out about small dog collars from making them, fitting them, and from the feedback owners give me when a collar lands well or does not.
What Counts as a Small Breed for Collar Fitting
The clearest rule is neck circumference rather than overall body size. If your dog's neck measures under 30cm, you are in small breed territory for collar fitting. That includes most chihuahuas, dachshunds, mini poodles, papillons, Yorkshire terriers, Maltese, bichons, and small mixed breeds. Italian greyhounds and other small sighthounds technically fall in the same circumference range but have specific requirements that I cover separately.
The fitting issue is not just length. A standard collar adjustable down to a 30cm neck still has a strap width of 25mm and standard hardware. On a 28cm neck, that 25mm strap takes up a disproportionate amount of the dog's neck profile, and the hardware weight pulls the collar down at the buckle.
Why Strap Width Matters for Small Dogs
A 25mm strap on a small neck does two things. Visually it looks heavy, dominating the dog's profile in a way that suggests a collar designed for a larger dog. Physically, the same strap width transfers tension over a narrower section of neck, which can cause discomfort during pulling or with smaller, more sensitive dogs.
A 15mm strap distributes weight differently. The collar sits lighter, looks proportionate, and the hardware can be sized down to match. The Sheep Shed Mini was developed specifically because I kept seeing standard wool collars look wrong on dachshunds and small terriers, and a smaller version was clearly needed.
Fit and the Two-Finger Rule
The standard fitting rule for any dog collar applies to small dogs as well: you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably between the collar and the neck. Tighter than that and the collar will rub or restrict. Looser than that and the dog can slip out, especially in a panic.
For small dogs, where to measure matters. The neck is narrowest just behind the ears and widens as it joins the shoulders. Measure at the point where the collar will actually sit, which is usually at or just below the base of the throat. Add 2cm for standard collar fit, or 2cm for the Mini.
If your dog is between sizes, size up rather than down. A collar that is slightly long on the smaller end of its adjustment range fits better than a collar maxed out at its longest setting. The measuring guide covers how to take the measurement properly.
The Sheep Shed Mini for Small Breeds
The Sheep Shed Mini is the small breed collar in the Sheep Shed range. It uses a 15mm strap with a two-row fishtail weave, in either Brampton wool (charcoal grey) or Dingley wool (ecru white). The hardware is solid brass, sized down to suit the smaller strap. It was developed when I kept seeing the standard 25mm Sheep Shed Classic look out of proportion on dachshunds.
The Mini is part of the broader Sheep Shed range, which uses named British wool throughout. For small dogs that wear their collar most of the day, the wool's breathability and natural lanolin matter as much as the fit.
Other Small Breed Collar Options at Green Dog
The Sheep Shed Mini is the wool option for small dogs. There are a few others in the workshop range worth knowing about.
The personalised paracord collar in the X-SMALL or SMALL size is the entry point most small dog owners start with. It is fully customisable on cord colours and BioThane strap colour, with solid brass hardware. The fit is good for a wide range of small breeds, and the personalisation lets you match the collar to the dog rather than the other way around.
The customisable BioThane collar in SMALL is the right call for small dogs that swim or live in wet conditions. The waterproof, wipe-clean BioThane works the same way it does on a larger dog, and the SMALL size is built around the proportions of a small breed neck.
For small sighthounds (Italian greyhounds in particular), the Sheep Shed Sighthound in the smallest size, or the Cotswold Rambler BioThane sighthound collar, are the better fit because they account for the specific shape of a sighthound neck. Standard small collars do not.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best collar size for a small dog?
Small dogs typically need a collar with a strap width of 15 to 20mm and a length sized to a neck circumference under 30cm. The Sheep Shed Mini uses a 15mm strap specifically for small breeds, and the personalised paracord and BioThane ranges offer SMALL and X-SMALL sizes for the same purpose.
Are 25mm collars too wide for small dogs?
A 25mm collar fits some small breeds at the upper end of the size range but tends to look heavy and feel disproportionate on most small dogs. A 15mm to 20mm strap distributes weight better and sits in proportion to the dog's profile.
What collar is best for a dachshund?
Dachshunds suit a 15mm strap collar with adjustability across the small to medium range. The Sheep Shed Mini in Brampton wool is the most popular dachshund collar from the Green Dog workshop, with the personalised paracord SMALL as an alternative for owners who want to choose colours.
How tight should a small dog's collar be?
Use the two-finger rule: you should be able to slide two fingers between the collar and the dog's neck. Any tighter and the collar restricts. Any looser and the dog can slip the collar in a panic.
Where can I buy a handmade small dog collar in the UK?
Green Dog makes handmade small dog collars in the Oxford workshop. The Sheep Shed Mini in British wool, the personalised paracord collar in SMALL or X-SMALL, and the BioThane collar in SMALL are the three main options, all with solid brass hardware.
