How slip leads work

A slip lead is a lead and collar in one. Tension tightens the loop; release loosens it. That pressure-and-release signal is clearest when the lead is positioned high on the neck, just behind the ears, and sized correctly. All leads here are made with BioThane® stoppers for precise, repeatable fit.

Which lead is right for your dog?

The Strand, 6mm rope slip lead
A single loop that sits behind the ears. Light, responsive and clear in its signal. Best suited to dogs that already understand loose-lead walking and benefit from a more direct setup than a standard collar and clip lead. Available in any colour combination.

The Notting Hill, figure of 8 nose slip lead
Two loops: one at the collar position, one around the muzzle. Works by guiding the head rather than pulling from the neck, more effective for dogs that pull consistently because it removes the forward reward before it happens. Same 6mm rope and solid brass hardware as The Strand.

10mm adjustable slip collar
A heavier rope collar-only option for dogs where a separate lead is preferred. The wider 10mm rope sits more comfortably on larger breeds and distributes pressure more evenly across the neck.

Frequently asked questions

What is a slip lead?

A slip lead is a lead and collar combined into a single loop. The loop tightens under tension and releases when tension drops, which is the basic mechanism of pressure-and-release communication. Slip leads work best on dogs already comfortable with loose-lead walking.

When should I use a figure of 8 instead of a slip lead?

A figure of 8 adds a second loop around the muzzle, which redirects the head rather than pulling against the neck. Use it for dogs that pull consistently, because it removes the forward reward of pulling before the dog can take it.

Are slip leads safe for puppies?

A slip lead can be used on a calm puppy that already understands loose-lead walking, but it should not be used for correction or for puppies that pull, because the constant tightening can teach the wrong association. A standard collar and clip lead is usually a better choice for young dogs in training.

What size slip lead rope do I need?

6mm rope suits most dogs from medium to large. 10mm rope sits more comfortably on bigger or stronger breeds and distributes pressure across a wider surface. The Strand and Notting Hill use 6mm, the 10mm slip collar is the heavier option.

Are Green Dog slip leads made to order?

Yes. Each slip lead is spliced, bound and hardware-fitted in my Oxford studio after you order, in your chosen colour combination. Dispatch is 2 to 6 working days.

Every piece tells you something about who made it.

Green Dog is not a brand. It is a studio. One person, one workbench, one standard. Every collar and lead is made by hand in Oxford — tested, measured, finished. You are not buying from a supply chain. You are buying directly from the person who made it.
